I love making my own products at home. There’s just something about doing it yourself that I get excited about. I think because I can see and control exactly what goes into it. Some of my favorite things to make myself are sugar scrubs. There are so many products out there on the market today for pregnant women today that are just not safe. There are so many chemicals in a lot of these products that I can’t even pronounce. I recently started using essential oils in my daily regimen and it’s become a passion of mine.
I’ve been using oils all throughout my pregnancy and one of the problems I’ve had lately is with my skin. My skin has been so extremely dry. I had this horrible dry patch on my face for months and no matter what I put on it stayed there. I was only using over the counter stuff because I didn’t want to use anything too harsh during my pregnancy so I was determined to find a natural solution. A lot of it was trial and error but I have FINALLY FINALLY found the answer! I am going to share my SECRET recipe with you today!
I started using this concoction on my face and the dry patch has gone away completely! I gave some of this to my sister not too long ago because she suffers from psoriasis on her face, well her skin has cleared up and she’s now addicted to this stuff!
For this recipe I used Lavender essential oil and Frankincense. Both have a calming effect and are beneficial for the skin, they help keep and restore the skin’s elasticity. In addition to using this face cream I also roll on Frankincense oil directly on my face every night before I go to bed. Frankincense has anti-aging properties!
While there are MANY essential oils that are safe for pregnant women, there are some that are not so it’s always good to do your research. During my pregnancy I used this book for my own reference – Gentle Babies. As long as essential oils are used correctly they are safe and have many therapeutic benefits.
It’s also important to do your research on the oils that you’re using for these recipes. Don’t just go to the drug store down the street and pick up a $5 bottle. Since there aren’t any regulations for essential oils, any company can say they are pure but they may only contain a few drops of oil and the rest be fillers. They might also be distilled with chemicals and these oils won’t benefit you in any way. Some are perfume grade, so they are only good for scent.
Here’s What You Need:
4 oz Raw African Shea Butter (I purchase mine from Amazon)
4 oz Organic Coconut Oil
10 drops Therapeutic Grade Lavender Oil
10 drops Therapeutic Grade Frankincense Oil
All you do is simply mix the ingredients together in a glass bowl. You should use glass when you’re doing anything with essential oils to avoid any plastic or paper compounds being broken down in your recipe. It also protects deterioration of any aromatic and therapeutic properties in the oils.
You can mix everything with a hand mixer or simply with a spoon. If the butter or oil is too hard you can heat them up to melt them a bit for mixing prior to adding in your essential oils.
Store the body butter in an airtight glass jar and you’re ready to apply! I use this every single day on my face as well as my body, I also use it on my belly to help the skin and prevent stretch marks! Frankincense oil can help with the skins elasticity, stretch marks, and according to the Gentle Babies book, the Lavender oil may even help calm an overactive uterus, such as in the case of Braxton Hicks. I’m hoping the dry skin + the stretch marks stay away with the help of my magical face cream. 🙂
