We have a class A picky eater in our house. It has gone on for some time now….
This munchkin likes macaroni, pizza, grilled cheese….see a pattern here? She will eat cheese, oh and bananas and that’s about it. Unless of course it comes from a cookie container. Sometimes in the evenings I try to sneak a couple of cookies myself but if I get caught, I hear cuuukey the rest of the night until I succumb to the pressure and finally give her 1…2….or 3.
She won’t even eat the pizza crust, she will eat the cheese and sauce off the top and leave the crust. We always knew she was going to be a picky eater. From very early on she was particular with her baby food. She would only eat carrots or sweet potatoes. We were worried at one point we were going to have an orange baby on our hands.
Needless to say, feeding this girl has not been easy. And to make matters worse, if we put something in front of her and she wants nothing to do with it, not only will she refuse to eat it but she will chunk it on the floor. We have a couple of furry garbage disposals below her high chair that like to wait to see if they get her rejects, so forget about salvaging meals and trying them later.
Last week, we decided that we were going to have to start being sneaky. When she was little and had problems gaining weight – if the doctors could only see her today – we used to sneak veggies and protein into her diet by making her smoothies. So we are here again. Our blenders getting a lot of action these days. The good thing about it is that smoothies are easy to make, you can put just about anything in them and I don’t have to worry about her lacking the fruits and veggies from her diet.
I know I’m not the only mom to struggle with trying to get their picky toddler to eat healthy, so I thought I would share Tater’s favorite smoothie recipe with you today. This is a high protein, fruit and veggie smoothie your toddler will love. I call it…
The Spin-nana Mash 🙂 because of it’s 2 main Ingredients. Spinach and Banana. And yes, it’s green.
2 Cups Spinach
8 oz Soft or Medium Tofu
3 Strawberries (fresh or frozen)
Milk – start with 1 cup
1 cup Baby cereal
Agave Nectar – optional – to taste
All you do is mix all the ingredients in a blender. I don’t put ice, although you can add some. I don’t measure the milk, I pour it in until it’s the right consistency. Your toddler might like it more milky but Tater likes hers thick, so we start with 1 cup blend, and add from there. Agave Nectar is optional to sweeten it. Bananas are very sweet, so depending on how many bananas you put in the smoothie you may not need this at all. Just blend and taste and see what it needs more of.
Tofu usually comes in 16 oz containers so I just throw in about half of it. Tofu is great for the kiddos that don’t like meat because it’s high in protein, low in fat and is a good source of vitamins. I usually get the soft or medium tofu for our smoothies because that’s what our grocery store carries, but there is also Silken Tofu and that is supposed to be great for smoothies because it’s soft and can be pureed easily.
I also add in some baby oatmeal or rice cereal to give her some extra vitamins and iron and it helps thicken it too.
This recipe makes about 2.5 servings, based on the size of a typical toddler cup.
