I get asked frequently about blogging, whether it’s questions from friends over dinner, my family at gatherings or from reader emails, there are so many people who don’t know exactly what blogging entails. Blogging is become more and more popular today amongst moms like me, who want to make a little money working from home. I don’t think blogging was not as popular a few years back as it is now. Some of the questions I receive are:
Can I make money blogging?
How much work does one need to put in?
Does it fit with a family schedule?
Today I’m going to tell you the 3 most important things that you need to know before you start a blog.
First things first. Yes. Bloggers make money. Just how quickly and how much bloggers are paid really depends on the amount of work one puts into it. Blogging is more than writing a post, hitting publish and then sharing to your friends and family on Facebook. That is, if you want more than just 100 of your Facebook friends reading your blog. The work it takes depends you on how quickly you want to grow it. The more work you put in, the faster you will see results.
Blogging isn’t a 9-5 job. While working from home without a set schedule can sound like a dream, it can easily become overwhelming if you don’t have a schedule and a system in place. Working from home can make you feel as if – you’re not really working, probably because it’s something that you WANT to do, but when you blog you work days, nights, weekends and sometimes even holidays. I was working from my hospital bed while I was in labor before having my son!
Pick a Narrow Niche
I am putting this in my top 3 things because your niche may ultimately be the deciding factor of whether or not your blog becomes profitable. Having a narrow niche coming out of the gates can only benefit you. In this sea full of bloggers there needs to be something that makes YOU stand out. If you start with a narrow niche and decide to broaden it a little as you go along that is completely ok. But if you choose a narrow niche and target a specific audience as soon as you start it may be easier for you to reach your target audience much quicker.
Can you still make money from a “lifestyle” blog? Yes you definitely can! I am doing it! I consider my blog a “lifestyle” blog. More specifically though I do work with many companies that are trying to reach the Latino audience and even more specifically – Latina moms. So the more specific you can get your niche the better. But don’t let anyone tell you that you cannot make money from a lifestyle blog. There are many of us that are doing it. It may take you a little longer to get some traction if the topics are too random though so try and keep it down to 2-3 categories.
It’s More than a Blog
Blogging is more than just publishing a blog post. You must also become a social media expert. At least in the sense that you will need to learn to use all of the social media accounts in the best way. Social media accounts are becoming extensions of blogs and the audiences on each platform like different things. Some social media accounts can be be KEY to getting noticed and getting jobs. Companies are not just hiring based off your blog numbers anymore, some are hiring based on your social media following and engagement.
So to recap:
If you are interested in starting a blog expect some work if you want it to grow quickly. It’s good to create a schedule and maybe choose different days of the week where you work on your blog.
Pick a niche that isn’t too broad. Remember that you can choose a narrow niche at first and always broaden it later.
Learn how to use each social media account because the users and your potential audience use them differently.
