So you just had a baby…welcome to Motherhood, and welcome to the land of expert parenting by EVERYONE. You are now in the land of great moms, some of those who mothered before you and are prepared to tell you how it’s done. Be prepared as mom experts are going to start coming out of the woodwork..from everywhere. And by this I mean your mother-in-law, your mother, your grandparents, your neighbors, your coworkers, the lady in the line at your grocery store….yes you get it. I mean EVERYONE. Be prepared for the “Well I used to….” or “Back then we used to….” The unsolicited advice comes from a good place. And it will come whether this is your first baby or your 5th, they always know more than you and expect you to learn a few things from them.
One of my MOST FAVORITE topics {sarcasm} to talk about with these baby experts has been about BREASTFEEDING. Mind you this is now my 30th month breastfeeding my little ones and all the tips and advice about how often and the best way to do things has now turned into questions like “When are you going to stop breastfeeding”? Yes I am still breastfeeding my 17mo old and I don’t see us stopping anytime soon, at least until she is ready. When I see signs that she is self weaning I will go with it, but I am not going to stop simply because others feel she is already too old, or old enough to stop, or she’s going to be too needy, or she needs to be more independent. C’mon, an independent 17 mo old – really? Yes those are the things that I have heard about why I should stop breastfeeding my daughter. Well looky hear moms, she’s mine and until the day you are the one breastfeeding her you can stop with your little remarks and unsolicited advice about what we do.
My advice to you new mom is, listen…but take things with a grain of salt. Yes these expert mothers have some good advice and experience, but times have changed. The key words to listen for are USED TO or BACK IN THE DAY. We live in a different world these days and not everything that was true back then is true today. This is your child and you raise her the way you want and you don’t have to do or don’t do things because others have done it a certain way in the past. People sometimes ALWAYS think that they can do it better than you. Even if that IT is parenting your own kid.
