I started off as just a mom with a camera, wanting to take better photos of her kids. That turned into a passion that I wanted to pursue that eventually had me to want to capture that magic for other families. It started in 2013 after my second daughter turned 6 months old. I had been laid off from my job and wanted to find ways of making money from home. I had two little ones and the last thing I wanted to do was to go back into the corporate world and leave them. So, I got a camera, some editing software and set on my path to start a business.
Let me be clear and say that I have never had any formal training in photography or photo editing and I have never taken a photography workshop, although I do think those could be super helpful for training! I started off with a passion that developed into a skill by watching a ton of YouTube videos! 🙂 If I can do it, so can you!
Once you have done a little practicing and have watched some YouTube training videos, you need a website to get your photography out into the world. You could start right off the bat with a photography website where you promote your photography skills and market your pricing or packages. Or you can take a slower approach and start with a photography blog where you post your photos to simply share your passions with the world. WordPress is the best way to start because it’s the easiest way for you to be able to transition from a website that is simply there for sharing your photography journey to a money making website later down the road whenever you are ready. First things first. There are lots of photographers who are only using Facebook and other social platforms to promote their photography services, but let me tell you why that is NOT enough. When someone goes to search for a photographer to photograph their family or wedding, they don’t go to the search bar on Facebook. The first place they go? GOOGLE. They type in something like “photographers near me” and it will bring up a list of photographers that are in their city to choose from. How do you think those photographers are coming up in a list on Google for those potential clients? They aren’t looking at Facebook posts or static websites. They are getting their list from websites that are also using great SEO. How do you get great SEO and stay on top of Google’s radar? By consistent content being posted to that website – from a BLOG. A recent blog post will show Google that your website is active and by using great targeted words in your posts will gauge how many times Google will send someone to your website.
YOU NEED A PHOTOGRAPHY BLOG
Most of my clients found me off Google, not Facebook, Not Pinterest but from Google searches that led clients directly to me. Update your blog regularly, even if it’s a few posts a month. Try to use words in your post that clients will use to search for you. In order to start a blog you need a WORDPRESS website that Google likes and will allow you to use the targeted keywords you need.
Here is a tutorial for setting up your WordPress site with Bluehost hosting. After setting it up, look for a theme with a blog. Simple as that!
