If a baby isn’t sleeping well, mama isn’t sleeping well and no one is happy. I know I’ve been there.
If baby sleeps well, baby is happy -> mama is happy -> everyone is happy. 🙂
It’s a proven formula! 🙂
Today I am sharing with you some ways to wind-down your little one before bedtime so that everyone sleeps better and I’m giving you our three-step bedtime routine that we do every single night to ensure a good night’s sleep…for everyone!
The most important thing to remember is when you are trying to get into a routine is that….
Consistency is KEY!
By being consistent your baby’s bedtime routine. Your baby will begin to recognize certain things as signals that will get his brain to start thinking sleep.
Here’s a list of things that you can do every night to wind-down your baby.
Wind-down Routine Examples
- white noise
- singing songs
Here is our 3-step bedtime routine that takes place in our home every single night.
Our routine begins with a bath. A nice, warm bath can make anyone sleepy. There is just something so calming about warm water. But I also find that babies exert a ton of energy splashing in the tub! My kids are always pooped by the time they get out of the tub.
They key to continuing that calming feeling after a bath is to follow-up with a massage. I started giving my girls massages when they were babies and it’s something we’ve continued with Lennon.
For Lennon, we use Aveeno® Baby Eczema Therapy Nighttime Balm all over his body because his eczema is so bad. I should say that it was pretty bad but since we have started using this balm we have seen such a difference with his skin already. Probably because it’s made with oatmeal which is what my grandma used to put on us as kids when we got mosquito bites! Maybe my grandma was on to something back then?? 🙂
The best thing about this is that it’s steroid-free but it works just as good as our steroid cream that we were using too often before. So it’s safe and something we can use every night! I have also started using it on my girls too because it’s so thick and moisturizing. It’s great for massages and a little goes a long way.
We end the night with a nursing session. Since the baby has already had a bath and a massage he is already pretty drowsy and typically falls asleep within 20 minutes, usually once he is done nursing.
If you are not nursing you could replace this step with, of course a bottle feeding or if the baby isn’t hungry you could make this quiet-time where you sing and rock him.
This routine works with our older kids too. After we give a bath and massages, the girls snuggle with me in bed and we do story-time.
Babies that are in a good routine will sleep longer, wake less and sleep more comfortably. And when baby sleeps at night, the whole family sleeps better.
I hope this helps! After having three, I found that these are the best way to get our babies to sleep better.
