Making the Leap from Facebook to Google+

LeapPin copy

As a blogger, being able to reach people is so important. We write, we share and we want to interact. It’s what we do, that’s why we blog. And if you can’t see what I write and share, then you can’t interact and my life as a blogger becomes harder. Facebook has been making our lives more difficult lately. My posts on Facebook that used to reach hundreds have now dwindled down to double digits and apparently it’s going to get worse unless I pay them to reach you.

I came across an article the other day – The End Of Organic Reach = The End Of Facebook? The article says that Facebook revealed in a leaked sales deck sent to partners that, unless you pay for ads, your organic reach is only going to get worse.

Worse? How much worse can it get? I’m not waiting around to find out.

I started thinking about my other options. And Google+ stuck out. Apparently a big potential SEO boost I’ve been missing out on. I came across this article How To Hack Google Plus For SEO Value. The article says that plus +1’s and shares on your Google+ posts have a direct correlation to your posts SEO.

“It is not the +1’s themselves that are causing the high rankings of posts but the fact that most +1’s on a site result in a shared post on Google+, which creates a followed link back to the post. It’s instant organic link building.”

The other day I asked a fellow blogger, who has a very strong presence on Google+ for some advice. She said that investing time and energy into Google+ now, will pay off heavily in the future and that it would only be beneficial for me. She also said that growing your Google+ circles and promoting your blog posts is important, but to use it for more than just that. She said it’s an opportunity to make connections with others who share the same interests. It’s about interaction.

You can find me on Google+ here. I’d love to connect with you. I am learning as I go but so far the experience with G+ has been really great. I was a hardcore Facebook user and it took me a little while to get used to the idea but here I am, trying to urge you to come along for the ride too.

Don’t be intimidated! G+ is new to most of us and I’ll be the first to admit it’s not like Facebook. Join me for a new Google+ hop to help grow your circles. Our first G+ Hop had an overwhelming 128 linkups in the first 24 hours! If you want to be notified the next time the Hop starts, give us your email address below and we will send you a quick notification the next time it goes live.

Hi Melanie! I’ve been reading posts reagarding this in the blogosphere and you’re right it’s pretty sad what has become of Facebook. I just wonder what the brands who always wanted to know how many fans we have will do now since our reach will not be the same even if we have thousands of fans. I guess only time will tell. 🙂 I linked up to your Google Plus Linky Party. I hope it will be a huge success. xo Happy New Year by the way!

I’ve never been very good with facebook, but I love Google+ and I’m starting to use it more. Glad to see a new link up dedicated just to G+, so thanks for the opportunity, Melanie!

I keep hearing how a presence on Google + is important. And I’ve had a profile page there for awhile. But so far, I just can’t see the value in it. Everyone I’m connected to post things – but there is no conversation like on facebook. It’s simply blog links, etc. What am I missing? 🙂

Hi Dionna, I thought the same thing except when I heard of the SEO value of using G+ for my blog and then I started seeing results and a boost in traffic to my blog I knew there was something to it. I plan on writing another article on it as I continue to use it and learn because I thought like you for the longest time.

Thanks for the suggestions. I’m saving this as I have not done anything with Google+. I’m not even sure if I have a correct profile for it yet. I’m at a loss but willing to learn more. Found you via the Pincentive Blog Hop tonight. Happy to meet you.

Hi Dana! Thanks for stopping by, nice to meet you also. I’m still learning myself but I’d be happy to help or answer any questions. I’ll be doing more posts on G+ as I start using it more.

You are so right about FB! It is feeling more and more like a waste of time. I love G+ and I think I will be focusing more of my efforts over there. I can’t wait until your new G+ link up starts!!!
